Festival of Vijayadashami:

The festival of Vijayadashami is celebrated due to the killing of Mahishasura by Maa Katyayani Durga, which has been in practice since before the time of Shri Ram. Weapons and vehicles are worshiped on this day.

Story of Katyayani Devi:

Rambhasura’s son was Mahishasura, who was extremely powerful. He had performed severe penance. Brahmaji appeared and said – ‘Vatsa! Ask for everything, except one death. After giving it some thought, Mahishasura answered, “All right, Lord.” I may not die from anyone, be it gods, demons or humans.Make certain that a woman kills me.. Brahmaji went to his world saying ‘Evamastu’. After getting the boon, he established his authority over all three worlds and became the ruler of Trilokadhipati.
Then Lord Vishnu along with all the Gods worshiped Bhagwati Mahashakti, the original cause of all. A divine radiance emanated from the bodies of all the Gods and appeared in the form of a very beautiful woman. Himavan gave a lion for Bhagwati to ride and all the Gods presented their weapons in the service of Mahamaya. Bhagwati was pleased with the Gods and assured them of soon freeing them from the fear of Mahishasura.

Maa Durga reached the Himalayas and roared loudly. A fierce war broke out between him and the demons of Mahishasura. All of Mahishasura’s fighters were eliminated one by one. The Goddess then pushed Mahishasura to engage in combat.. Mahishasura tried to kill the Goddess by deceit by creating different types of magical forms but in the end Bhagwati cut off Mahishasura’s head with her chakra. It is said that all the Gods had given a weapon to Goddess Katyayani and Armed with the same divine weapons, the Goddess fought with Mahishasura.
