The katha (story) of Karwa Chauth :

Karwa Chauth Vrat 2023

Karwa Chauth’s popular legend revolves around Veeravati and her seven brothers. Here’s how the story goes:

In ancient times, there lived a wise Brahmin named Ved Sharma in the city of Indraprastha. He had a wife named Leelavati, and together, they had seven sons and a daughter named Veeravati. As Veeravati grew up, her marriage was solemnized with all the customary rituals.

When the Kartik Krishna Chaturthi arrived, Veeravati eagerly began her Karwa Chauth fast, observing it with great devotion. However, due to hunger and thirst, she fainted even before the moonrise. Seeing her unconscious, her seven brothers became deeply concerned and began searching for a solution.

In their quest to revive their beloved sister, they devised a plan. They showed her the light of a flickering lamp from behind a tree, pretending it was the moonrise. Believing it to be the actual moonrise, Veeravati performed her rituals and broke her fast. Unknowingly, she had taken her meal before the true moonrise.

As a result, her husband met an untimely demise. Veeravati was heartbroken and deeply remorseful for her actions. In her distress, she renounced all food and water, essentially giving up her life.

That very night, Indrani, the Goddess of Rain, descended to Earth and inquired about the reason for her sorrow. Veeravati explained her plight, how she had broken her fast before the actual moonrise, leading to her husband’s death.

Indrani, touched by her sincerity, assured her that she could bring her husband back to life with the power of Karwa Chauth vrat. She instructed Veeravati to observe the Karwa Chauth fast with strict adherence to all rituals and prayers. Indrani herself would bless her efforts.

Veeravati, filled with determination, observed the Karwa Chauth fast for twelve months, following every detail of the rituals meticulously. Then, as instructed, she placed her husband’s lifeless body under a banyan tree and performed the Karwa Chauth vrat with utmost devotion. Following the puja, she placed a few drops of water in his mouth.

Miraculously, her husband came back to life, and the couple was joyously reunited. From that day on, Veeravati and her husband enjoyed a blissful married life, filled with love and happiness. Over time, they were blessed with children, wealth, and long-lasting happiness.

This heartwarming tale of Karwa Chauth illustrates the power of devotion, determination, and the deep bond between a husband and wife. It reminds us of the significance of the Karwa Chauth vrat and its ability to bring forth blessings and happiness in married life.
